David Plouffe, Barack Obama's Campaign Manager, asks supporters to help beat the RNC's Cash Machine

July 14, 2008

David Plouffe, Barack Obama's Campaign Manager, sent a video address to BarackObama.com's mailing list, displaying figures about the financial status of the RNC and McCain campaign and projecting they will spend this money on "untrue negative ads".

Following is David's message, transcribed from the video footage:

"Hi everybody,

It's David Plouffe, Barack's campaign manager. We just wanted to spend a few moments with you updating you on where the race stands and what our opponents are up to. If you look at the Republican National Committee, which is probably going to be the main armor of the McCain campaign, they have over 53 million dollars in the bank, and that was at the end of May. Their financial position has improved in the last month - the RNC's cash on hand is raising and so now we face a position where both and the RNC together have 96 millions dollars in the bank, almost a hundred million dollars. And we know how they are going to spend their money, running untrue negative ads all across the country. The McCain campaign made the point they outspent us over three to one on television ads in the last couple of months. They are using that RNC money, they are using the McCain money they were ably to raise while we were still engaged in the primaries to really spend a lot of money out there. And so we have to make sure that we are matching that, and the only way we can do that is for you all to continue to help us, we can't count on anybody else. We can't wait for a cavalry out there, the cavalry does not exist. We are responsible for defending ourselves against these attacks.

So, the only way we can do this is obviously at the grassroots level with your volunteer help and that needs to be financed at the grassroots level as well. We currently have over 1.7 million donors. We're going to ask all of you who are part of that group to give again if you can to help us continue to strengthen this campaign and those of you who haven't contributed yet – we really need you to get involved now, to make your first contribution, to match the volunteer work we're sure you're already doing for us, so that you can help grow this campaign. So just know that we treasure and value you're relationships with us, what you've already done for the campaign, but the only way we're going to be successful these next 16 weeks, is if you get involved at a historic level to allow us to win. So thanks for your time today and thanks for all you've done."
